There will be a lot more kids (and adults) on the roads and in unexpected places as we get closer to Halloween. These tips will help ensure everyone arrives safely at their destination.
If you’re Driving
- Stay off your phone!
- Slow down, especially on neighborhood streets, and be on the lookout for ghouls and goblins darting out from between parked cars
- Remember that many children will celebrate Halloween at events that aren’t always on Halloween night, so be alert for trick-or-treaters at other times, too.
- Young trick-or-treaters may think the roads belong to them on Halloween and be unaware of routine traffic dangers.
- If you see someone driving extremely fast, or if they seem impaired, call your local authorities and report it.

If you’re Walking
- Wear something bright or reflective and carry a flashlight so cars can see you.
- Always use a buddy system and have a rendezvous point in case you become separated from your group.
- Look both ways at stop signs and signals before crossing, and always use the crosswalk when one is available.
Halloween Party Safety
- If you drink, don’t drive. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your reflexes and driving ability.
- Designated drivers save lives. Schedule a ride-sharing service or call a cab. Nearly half of all fatalities near Halloween in 2023 were alcohol-related.
If you’re hosting the party
- Provide non-alcoholic beverage options and plenty of water.
- Consider collecting car keys from everyone drinking.
- You know when someone has had enough. Take action to make sure they get home safety.
- Have your spare room ready, just in case.
